Text Box: MYTH: Nuclear, wind, and solar power (even though good sources of energy) will reduce America’s oil and energy dependencies. FACT: Nuclear, solar, and wind can be used to make electricity but cannot directly power a car—at least not until there is widespread adoption of electric cars. And since only 2% of electric power is generated by burning oil (see chart), we can put up all the nuclear, wind, and solar plants we want, but they won’t save a barrel of oil. Nevertheless, nuclear, wind, and solar power are important technologies that need to be supported as a long-term investment in America’s energy infrastructure.
